Iowa Dental Plans

Although there aren’t as many dental plans available in Iowa as there are in other states because of the lack of metropolitan areas, there are still Iowa Dental Plans that can save you money for both individual and family dental care. There are basically two types of dental plans that you have to choose from. These are called Dental Insurance and Discount Dental Plans. Let’s take a look at both.

Dental Insurance

Traditional dental insurance is designed for preventive care only. This means that you’ll get discounted rates on your cleanings, x-rays and other types of care that will help to prevent any major dental costs in the future. However, if you already have problems with your teeth then you can plan on paying for 100% of those costs on your own because insurance of any kind does not cover pre-existing conditions. This means that if you have bad teeth or need to see a dentist right away because of tooth pain, buying a dental insurance policy will do you no good at all. Most dental insurance companies will begin to pay for a small portion of the costs of pre-existing dental care after you’ve gone through a mandatory one year waiting period. That’s a long time to wait for anyone that needs immediate or emergency dental care.

Discount Dental Plans

Discount plans are not insurance. There aren’t any claim forms to fill out at the dentists office and you don’t have to pay a deductible. What Discount Dental Plans are is a reduced fee for service plan that will allow you to save as much as 10-60% off on both major and minor dental care. All that you need to do is pay the dentist in full at the time of your visit. This way the dentist doesn’t have to wait 30-60 days to get their money back from an insurance company and they don’t have claims denied where they’re left holding the bag.

How a Discount Plan Works

#1. You locate a participating provider in your area.

#2. You pay the low annual fee to join the plan. This is usually less than $100 for an individual or below $150 for a family, depending on where you live.

#3. Make an appointment to see your new dentist. If you already have a dentist it’s very possible that they may already be a provider and you just aren’t aware of it. If they’re not it’s very easy to get them set up, if they’re willing.

#4. Visit your dentist and determine exactly what needs to be done to your teeth. Determine what you can afford to pay that day and get it done.

#5. Pay your dentist and you’re on your way!
